Duroflex Orthopedic Mattress: What the Five Zones Actually Do

Orthopedic gets used loosely in mattress advertising. Half the time it just means firm.

A proper orthopedic mattress is doing something more specific than that. It varies its support along the length of the body, because your head, shoulders, lower back, hips and knees all press down differently. Here is what that looks like in practice.

Your body does not press down evenly

Lie on a flat, uniformly firm surface and the heaviest parts of you sink furthest. The hips drop, the lower back follows, and the spine spends the night in a curve it would not choose.

Lie on something uniformly soft and the same thing happens, only faster. Neither surface is wrong because of its firmness. They are wrong because they treat every part of you the same way.

Five zones, five jobs

Our Duropedic range uses a 5 Zone Orthopedic Support system that maps to the head, shoulder, lumbar, hip and knee zones. Each one has a job.

  • Head and neck. Gentle support, since almost no weight lands here. Too much firmness pushes the neck out of line.
  • Shoulders. Softer, so the shoulder can settle in rather than being propped up. This is what side sleepers feel first.
  • Lumbar. The firmest zone. It resists the load that would otherwise let the lower back sag, which is where most back pain complaints start.
  • Hips. Firm, but with enough give to avoid pressure building at the joint.
  • Knees and legs. Lighter support, because there is less weight and less need for it.

Duroflex 5 Zone Orthopedic Support is tested and recommended by the National Health Academy, and it runs through most of the mattresses in this collection.

Firm is not the same as orthopedic

This is the most common mistake we see. People with back pain buy the firmest mattress they can find and wonder why their shoulders ache a month later.

A firm surface alone does not keep your spine neutral. It just stops everything sinking, including the parts that should. Zoned support is what gives you firmness where you need it and give where you do not, which is why a medium firm orthopedic mattress suits more people than a very firm one.

The range, by how firm it feels

Twenty mattresses sit in this collection. Grouping them by feel is the quickest way in.

  • Firm. Duroflex Back Magic Orthopedic Coir, doctor recommended with naturally cooling coir, Back Magic Pro adds memory foam that cradles the body while keeping the firm base. Duropedic Airboost 3.6 is the firm option in our fibre core range.
  • Medium firm. Duroflex LiveIn Orthopedic Memory Foam, with 5 Zone Orthopedic Support, adaptive memory foam and triple anti microbial fabric, Spine Rest is the other medium firm option, doctor recommended with 5 Zone support.
  • Adjustable. Duropedic Airboost 6.8 and 6.10 Arctic Ice let you set the firmness between medium firm and firm, so you are not locked into one decision.
  • Plush, with support underneath. Balance Plus adds a plush Euro top over 5 Zone Orthopedic Support. Balance uses memory foam that cradles the body,
  • Spring based. Duroflex Posture Perfect combines 5 Zone Orthopedic Support with Heat Away technology and zero motion transfer, for couples who want orthopedic support without feeling each other move.

If back pain is the reason you are shopping

Three mattresses in the range are built specifically around it.

  • Back Magic Pro Plus. 5 Zone Orthopedic Support, designed for back pain, with a 15 year warranty.
  • Duropedic SpineX. A new launch with 5 Zone Orthopedic Support and a 15 year warranty.
  • Strength Memory Foam Coir Orthopedic. Doctor recommended, pairing 5 Zone support with naturally cooling coir.

Worth saying plainly. A mattress supports recovery and helps you sleep in better posture, but it does not treat a back condition. If the pain is ongoing, ask your doctor which firmness suits you before ordering.

Warranty tells you how it is built

  • 15 years on Back Magic Pro Plus and Duropedic SpineX.
  • 10 years on LiveIn Orthopedic Memory Foam, Balance Plus, Posture Perfect and the Airboost 3.8, 6.8 and 6.10 models.
  • 7 years on Back Magic, Back Magic Pro, Strength, Balance and Airboost 3.6.
  • 5 years on Spine Rest.

Register the warranty once your mattress is delivered so the cover starts from a record rather than a receipt.

Who should skip an orthopedic mattress

If you love a very soft, plush surface and have no back or joint complaints, this range is not for you. Orthopedic construction is about structured support, and a sleeper who wants to sink in will find even our plusher models firmer than expected.

Start with firmness, not the word orthopedic. Medium firm suits most people, firm suits back and stomach sleepers, and adjustable suits anyone unsure. Then check the warranty and order your Duroflex orthopedic mattress in the size your bed takes.
